For starters picture, an advertisement for thigh-high clothes where the model is photographed through the arms down (see it here), the ASA explained, "Although we considered it was reasonable for ads for hosiery to feature feamales in minimal garments, we considered the pictures and design's poses had been gratuitous. We considered the pictures were overtly intimate and they demeaned females by emphasizing the design's crotch, buttocks and tits by excluding her face."
And also for the picture shown above, "We considered the picture to-be gratuitous, particularly in an advertising for knitwear. We in addition considered the model's facial expression showed up blank, if not not sure, and had been worried that she appeared vulnerable. We considered the image was overtly sexual." And "When it comes to explanations given, we considered the adverts were expected to trigger serious offense to people to American Apparel's site."
American Apparel informed the ASA that "they did their utmost to abide by the requirements associated with business as well as creating genuine, honest and memorable images highly relevant to their particular customer base."
